3.1 please read this first » general guidelines

In this section you will find CV and résumé templates in varying formats. This is not meant to be prescriptive -- please feel free to submit something in your own style. You may notice that the different templates include different sections. While there is some information that we expect to be included regardless of the style you choose (e.g. your name, contact information, education history), many of the other decisions of what to include are up to you. It is important to highlight as many of your strengths as possible with the items you choose:

  • How can you show that you have been trusted with responsibility, and that you are reliable and consistent?
Often times a job is a great way of accomplishing this. Other options might include mentorship, tutoring, or a volunteer position.
  • How can you demonstrate your academic drive?
Are you a member of any clubs and/or organizations? Have you received any awards? Do you want to report your overall GPA, or a GPA for a specific subset of classes?
  • Are there specific skills that you want to list?
Are you a strong writer? Do you feel like you have a lot of programming experience? Have you traveled a lot? Do you speak another language?
  • What examples do you have of collaboration?
Many jobs are also indications of collaboration. Being a member of a band or an athletic team is often a sign that you've had practice working with others. Some courses involve group projects and may be worthwhile noting.
  • What are some of the ways in which you spend your time?
We encourage you to include non-traditional examples if you feel they could be relevant. Do you watch a lot of documentaries? Do you care for other family members? Do you create content?

Some other notes:

  • please do not include a photo
  • please make sure that any formatting decisions you make do not interfere with readability: less formatting is often better
  • please limit your CV or résumé to those experiences, skills, etc. that are most relevant to the UCR opportunity; in contrast to a formal academic CV, this document does not need to be exhaustive
  • we hope you can limit your CV or résumé to one page -- our examples here include notes and many optional items -- though this is not a requirement and readability should be your primary consideration
  • if you do have any prior research experience, please include it

What counts as prior research experience?
The most relevant research experiences may be research or independent study with a professor during the academic year, or a summer internship at a company. You are also welcome to include research experience that occurred as part of a course – for instance, laboratory experiments or an upper-division literature review paper – as long as this coursework contributed to new understanding and was not a routine exercise. For example, SEA-PHAGES or similar research courses are excellent examples of research experience. In contrast, a physics demonstration laboratory does not involve novel research and should not be included.
