From the publisher: "COVID-19 is the virus that proved the fragility of the world. It took only the simplest form of life to shake the connectivity and dependency of society. This book is a real-time record and recommendation from a community of complexity scientists reacting to the pandemic. Through nontechnical articles, interviews, and discussions spanning the early days of the pandemic through the fall of 2021, researchers seek ways to stay responsive to complexity when every force conspires toward simplicity. The Complex Alternative encompasses immunology, epidemiology, psychology, inequality, and collapse."

Meet Leah Brennan-Magidson, Complexity Explorer program manager
We are excited to welcome Leah to the CE team. Leah is the enthusiastic and knowledgeable voice answering your admin@complexityexplorer.org inquiries, while also leading our content development teams toward exciting new offerings. We asked her to answer a few questions in a few short sentences to introduce herself.
What is your favorite thing about SFI?
SFI has this special quality of creating a fun and welcoming environment full of smart people thinking about fascinating things. There is always something new to learn and someone amazing to discuss it with!
What is your favorite thing about complex systems?
I find the diversity of perspectives and disciplines that are incorporated into the broad field of complex systems science to be compelling. I believe we need this kind of approach to generate transformative solutions to the problems we are currently facing. Working at SFI during the COVID-19 pandemic has really brought this point home for me.
What is your favorite organism?
I’m going to be unoriginal and say my favorite organism is my dog, Ella.
What do you love the most about Complexity Explorer?
I’m inspired by the mission of Complexity Explorer. I am passionate about access to education and excited to be part of the effort to make complex systems science — and the insights and techniques developed at SFI — available to everyone.
I also love the enthusiasm of the Complexity Explorer community. Your support makes this a unique and lively learning community!
What are you reading right now?
I tend to read a few books at a time to mix things up and keep it interesting. Right now I’m reading: Mathematics for Human Flourishing by Francis Su, Something Deeply Hidden by SFI Fractal Faculty Sean Carroll, and Untamed by Glennon Doyle.
Welcome, Leah! We're excited to have you as part of the CE community.
Submit a CE T-Shirt Design
We love our classic fractals and trees, but maybe it's time for something more? If you've always wanted to see your vision of complexity on a t-shirt, now is the time! A new year...a new (additional) design for Complexity Explorer.
Design guidelines can be found here. Upload your design file here.
