coherence

The cohesiveness, coordination, and correlation characterizing emergent structures in self-organizing systems. For example, laser light is coherent compared to the light emanating from a regular light bulb, and flocks of birds exhibit qualitative and quantitatively different structures from isolated birds in flight. Oftentimes, these emergent structures are difficult to infer from only observing lower-level phenomena.
