Hello, and welcome to the Summer 2018 edition of Introduction to Agent Based Modelling So, if you're just now watching the videos in order, the video you just saw was the one about an overall introduction to the course, that I've done and I've recorded it actually a few years ago. But I always like to record a video right at the beginning of the course that also would introduce you to this year in particular. And so this is the video for the Summer 18 course. and normally I do is with a nice backdrop and everything like that, but this particular year just before the course started , I happen to be at a meeting at the Santa Fe institute .. so we are I'm actually at a meeting for alumni of members of the Summer school of the Santa Fe institute and I went to the Santa Fe Institute Summer School in ... 2002 so I'm back here again just to chat with a bunch of my ...other alums and chatting about the world of complex systems and agent based modelling and all that great stuff.. and so I decide What the heck I'll record it live while I'm here and .. just do it right here ... and put it out for you ..more in the spirit of things or anything that really impress me about the way that agent based modelling is being taught or being understood and its been very useful right and I think it will influence some of the course and some of the..ways that we're thinking about things as we go forward and ofcourse we get this beautiful, wonderful backdrop of .. Santa Fe ... in New Mexico world that we get to look out as we are having this great meeting and so ... anyways Welcome again to the 2018 edition of an Introduction to Agent Based Modelling and .. I do wanna kinda make a couple of comments .. so these videos now have been putting together for three years right! and so as a result you will see videos from this year that are recorded , you'd see videos from last year that were recorded.. videos from previous year where we are always trying to update everything to make it as good as possible to have the newest and the latest stuff That being said .. I don't have the ability to update every video every year as a result there are somethings that kind of creep in over the years and you will notice specifically that since I first taught this course we've moved from NetLogo 5.3.1 to the newest version of NetLogo being NetLogo 6.0.4 and that's the software we are gonna use in this course. Now .. functionally there aren't many differences in those that did exist. I think I may have updated all of them last year so they should be now up and running.. so in some of the videos that you are gonna see ..you're gonna see NetLogo 5.3.1 and in some you're gonna see NetLogo 6.0.1 and in some you're gonna see NetLogo 6.0.4. Now there aren't many differences between 6.0.1 and 6.0.4 so that shouldn't be a problem.. there are some differences specifically cosmetic differences between 5.3.1 and 6.0.1 But what I have tacked on at the end of this introduction is a video that I recorded last year talking about what those major differences are so this way when you are viewing the 5.3.1 videos you say "Hey that doesn't quite look like the way I remember, that doesn't quite have the same or quite look the same way that build code does up on the screen".... Go back to this video. It will show you when those .. differences are truly part of the changes and when there actually are significant differences right! .. And ... yeah I think these approvements are for the better .. The software is easier to work with ...than it was before but you know I do want you to be aware. And I am going to try and update more of the videos this year so there would be fewer videos this year than there were last year that look like the older version So long story short use NetLogo 6.0.4 the newest, latest and greatest version stick with it throughout the course I think it would really help you out
